Begun in 2017 the earlier works in 2017 and 2018 represent my conceptual goal of compositions that stretch visualization norms. They follow from an even earlier test painting done in 1986.

Open areas are favored in these works as is the emphasis on my interpretation of Yin/Yang contrasts. That seesaw of protagonists vying for attention has morphed in the later paintings with a similar archaic space but with more compositional elements. In later works the seesaw tug has diminished in favor of more complex correspondences.
- Acrylic on paper (22.5″ x 30″) and hardboard (3′ x 4′)
- Pasted elements, rubbed on paint, scrubbed, repeat.
- Space-stacked, abstracted items still identifiable.
- Yin & Yang simplicity.
“But, after all, the aim of art is to create space – space that is not compromised by decoration or illustration, space within which the subjects of painting can live.”
Frank Stella, New York City, NY
“As the philosopher Immanuel Kant put it, the concept of space serves as the organizing principle by which we perceive and interpret the world, even in abstract ways”.
Jordana Cepelewicz, “Quanta Magazine“ January 14, 2019
